Carl and Cambodian boy with facial tumour

Children's Surgical Centre (CSC)
Phnom Penh, Cambodia - 2006

"This boy has a large facial tumour that was expanding quite rapidly and had begun to affect his breathing. A tracheostomy was performed and a plastic airway was inserted into the trachea (windpipe).
A few days later when this photo was taken, the boy was able to breathe much easier and I managed to use some of my physiotherapy skills to teach him how to look after the airway and to cough/clear effectively.
In case you are wondering the airway was to allow time for a specialist surgeon (with experience in removing tumours in this highly problematic region) who would be visiting the CSC in the near future."

Update July 2021- Scholarship for 2021/2022

Temporary Changes to the Terms for the Award of Carl's Scholarship

Given the difficulties associated with international travel during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Dr Carl Richard Jackson Scholarship will be offered to medical students in the graduating classes of 2021 and 2022 as a post-elective 'award'.

Applicants will need to submit and be selected on a 500- word essay outlining their commitment to global health and how they propose to volunteer to work in a developing economy, as soon as travel allows. The preference is that the successful applicants would look for opportunities to use their award on a 4-8 week experience in a developing country, as soon as they can.

This temporary approach will apply in 2021 and 2022 but be reviewed in late 2021, and again in 2022. At that point we can consider whether the scholarship can revert to its previous way of being offered or if it needs to continue under this temporary arrangement. The remaining terms and conditions of the Scholarship will remain unchanged.
